Beginnings : A solo exhibition

In Beginnings, Yamuna Matheswaran looks back at her life and that of her family’s through the lens of nostalgia, gender, and cultural history in an attempt to better understand her experiences growing up. Born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and raised in several cities across India, the artist explores her inherited Tamil identity, seeking to reestablish a connection with it while rejecting the gendered expectations that have accompanied it. By reflecting on the social milieu into which the older generation was born, the artist attempts to empathise with them and memorialise the good times while coming to terms with certain difficult events, with the ultimate goal of moving forward with a renewed sense of agency.
